A precedence diagram is a visual representation of a project's schedule that clearly shows which events, activities, and tasks are dependent on one another to begin or conclude.
Critical tasks, noncritical tasks, and leisure time are depicted in the precedence diagram. As previously stated, the precedence diagram will show the task's link to other tasks. It also includes a "what if," "worst-case," "best-case," and "most likely" scenario.
Four Precedence Diagramming Dependencies
You must master dependencies in order to master the precedence diagramming method. Dependence is a task that, in order to be completed, is reliant on another task. There are four different sorts of dependencies, as listed below.
- Mandatory Dependency
A mandatory dependency is one that cannot be avoided, such as adding water to a pool that is being built. It's not possible to put the water in first and then build the pool around it.
- Discretionary Dependency
A discretionary dependency aids resource optimization. The pool's sides aren't built with any kind of rationality in mind. It's just as likely and important to start with one side as it is with the other. However, there may be a compelling reason to begin with one over the other.
- External Dependency
The project team has no control over an external dependency. Again, in the case of the pool, it could be that the weather hinders digging or that the permit process takes longer than intended.
- Internal Dependency
An internal dependency is one that can be managed. Two individuals can't dig the pool hole if there's just one shovel. In this instance, the schedule must either divide the labor among the two people or purchase a new shovel.
Why Use the Precedence Diagramming Method?
A precedence diagram is an excellent tool for developing a more accurate project plan, keeping work on track, and meeting deadlines. This is accomplished by visually portraying the entire endeavor.
Of course, the greatest benefit of employing the precedence diagramming method is that it highlights the schedule's dependencies. This will eliminate bottlenecks later in the project, and the precedence diagram will help to explain how changes in the timetable will affect the schedule.
The precedence diagram can assist indicate what the essential processes and activities are in the schedule since it depicts the activities and dependencies in a project. This aids in the identification of the critical path, which is an important scheduling tool.
